Former ‘On Camp with Kelly’ athlete becomes World Champion
The youngest original member of ‘On Camp with Kelly’ created by Dame Kelly Holmes before the 2004 Olympic Games took the ITU World Triathlon title in style on Saturday 14 September in Hyde Park. Non Stanford became Senior World Champion just twelve months after lifting the World Under 23 trophy in New Zealand.
Cheered on by Dame Kelly Holmes and former members of ‘On Camp with Kelly’, plus a large number of friends and family, Non was third in the overall standings going into the race and had to make up for a penalty for not placing her wetsuit in the box in the transition to the bike.
She won the race in emphatic style, with a dominant 10K run showing her strength after years of cross country running to cross the line 25 seconds ahead of her nearest rival Ireland’s Aileen Reid and Australia’s two time World Champion Emma Moffatt third. Non’s time was 2:01.33 to end the series on 4220 points.
Dame Kelly recognised her talent, commitment and work ethic to put in hours of training at a young age. She made the switch to triathlon five years ago, encouraged by Dame Kelly after a frustrating period of illness and injuries in athletics to build on her endurance base and early sporting career in swimming.
Dame Kelly said:
“Non was a really promising junior athlete but she kept picking up illness and injury, so it seemed the logical thing to try triathlon as she made so much talent and had been cross training on the bike for long periods of time.
“It was brilliant to be there in Hyde Park to see Non win the World title, her transition from athletics to triathlon has been quite incredible. I’m so happy for Non and her family, all the hard work and sacrifice has paid off and she should be very proud of what she has achieved in a relatively short space of time. Qualification for London 2012 came around just a bit too soon for Non but she can look forward to Rio now in three years’ time!”
At the end of last year, Non enjoyed a breakthrough in the World Triathlon series, winning the Mixed Team World Title in August and Women’s World Under 23 title last October. Born in Swansea, 24 year old Non, was only 15 when was selected for ‘On Camp with Kelly’, and travelled to South Africa for a four week training and education camp in Potchefstroom. The flagship programme of Kelly Holmes Education came to an end in December 2012 after running for nine years.
Other former members of ‘On Camp with Kelly’ now performing on the world stage include Hannah England, World Silver medallist (1500m) and Laura Weightman who both competed at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Dani Christmas has recently moved into cycling and will be competing in the National Track Championships in Manchester from 27-29 September.
